Prom Dress Shopping Timeline: When to Start for Prom 2027
The number one question we hear from prom girls and their moms: “When should I start looking?” Here is a simple plan so nothing sneaks up on you.
The short answer is earlier than you think. Popular styles and colors in your size are easiest to find when you start looking early, and you want time for fittings and alterations before the big night. Prom dates vary by school, so use this timeline as a guide and count back from your own date.
Now Through December: Browse and Dream
This is the fun, no-pressure phase. Save looks you love, notice which colors and silhouettes you keep coming back to, and read up on the Prom 2027 trends. If you already have a favorite designer, browse our Sherri Hill, Jovani and Portia and Scarlett collections.

Jovani 48450
A one shoulder gown with floral detail, in Black, Navy and Red, sizes 00 to 24. Great for saving to your list while you decide on a color.

Once you have a few favorites, come in for a private try-on. Bring one or two people whose opinions you trust, such as a parent and a best friend. Our stylists will pull styles in your size so you can see what actually looks and feels right. This is the best time to say yes to the dress while you still have the full selection to choose from.

Portia and Scarlett PS23721C
Offered in six colors, including Emerald, Gold AB, Hot Pink Blue, Hot Purple, Red and Silver Nude, sizes 0 to 18.

Once your dress is chosen, plan your fitting so the hem, straps and bodice are just right. Then pick shoes, jewelry and a clutch. Bring your shoes to your fitting so the hem is tailored to your heel height.
Tip: Try on your dress with the undergarments, shoes and hairstyle you plan to wear. It makes a big difference in how a gown fits and moves.
April and May: Final Details
